Cannas Burning in Full Sun

Some cannas can take full sun in the south, clearly others cannot. This is not a problem in the north where my experience has been thus far.

I was taking a walk around my new garden this morning and taking note of what was there. I had already noticed the bright red cannas that are blooming wonderfully, but many of the more exotic looking cannas with burgundy or variegated foliage are struggling. Those that have been planted in the shade are smaller but healthy in comparison to those in the full sun. In the north these plants all take full sun, but clearly in the hot southern sun, they suffer. The main problem seems to be that the leaves are brown indicating burning on the lighter variegated areas. Additionally the yellow blooming cannas in the front, have withered, unattractive blooms, also indicating that the sun is too strong here for that exposure. Clearly it is too late in the season to move any of these plants, but that chore will go on the list for later in the season. The two hellebores though on the hot south side of the house, will definitely be moved immediately. Hellebores require full to part shade in all areas of the country, especially in this climate.
