» Barbara Nicholson Bell - Sun or shade?
This is such a good idea, Kate! I have a border of plants, mostly hosta, around my patio where the barbecue grill is. The patio is also surrounded by a high fence. This block a lot of the sun, in addition to the shadow cast by the house for part of the day.Which of these herbs can grow in shade? Do they require acid soil or other particular amendments? I'd like to try this. If it is too shady, perhaps doing container plantings would be better and I would use a different location.

I think that you will perhaps have to go with pots that can get some sunshine. None of the common culinary herbs do well in the shade, although some will tolerate part shade. Most of them grew up on stony Mediterranean soils! Check your fence to see how far the sun shades and that will give you an idea of where you can plant sun loving herbs, hopefully not in next doors' garden!.
Good luck and happy bbq season!
Kate
