» katycopsey - adding soil amendment and soil tests

Every book and Extension office advise tells us that before we start a garden, or the new gardening year, we should first get a soil test, and then amend the soil. Standard amendments are compost, manure, perlite, peat moss etc. I know many people that do the amendments to help soil, but very few do the soil tests. As they are generally under $20 and easy to do - why do people not do them? My own personal excuse it that I don't have time or the right box or where to send it to. This really is weak as I know I only have to contact my Extension Educator to find where to send it to locally, and I have given plenty of presentations about how to do them - they take less than 5 minutes and a little baggie works just fine.

What do the rest of you American and worldwide gardeners do?

In response to adding soil amendment and soil tests posted by katycopsey:

I guess I'm lazy - mostly I look around at the gardens of my neighbors to see what grows well and what doesn't - since their soil and mine are pretty much the same.

I suppose it would be smart to do the soil test, though, wouldn't it! happy
