» Feature Writer Robert Dailey - Buddleia Invasive?

Kate:
We saw tons of buddleia on our trip to Ireland this summer, and I have raised a ton of it in Santa Fe.
It does seem to have peculiar reseeding habits. I've never had a problem with reseeding, or sprouting in unwanted places in Santa Fe.
In the high desert of Santa Fe (7,200 ft.) it behaved like an herbaceous perennial, dying back significantly, almost to the ground, every winter.
I cut them back mercilessly in the early spring, (at least by half...sometimes more, along with my Russian sage) and they always came back more beautiful than before.
Thanks for the great article. b

Thank you Bob
I do think that cutting this plant back every yr is benificial to keeping it tidy. And of course the most logical thing to do to stop invasive tendencies is to lop of the dead flowers before the seeds are formed - but who had the time to baby these things????

I know. I have always loved this plant. The flower heads are so beautiful, as well as its greenish-gray leaves, and aroma, but it is such an unruly plant.
Eventhough I do not like symmetry, this is one plant that could use some.
