» stevenmelancon - asparagus

My asparagus bed is 3 years old and the original plants are doing fine. My trouble is I have hundreds of volunteers from last years seeds. Will the new seedlings choke the old plants? They are so thick I'm inclined to treat them as weeds.

You do need to thin the asparagus seedlings. The average spacing for asperagus is 8-10". This will give the roots space to spread and produce a good harvest for you. Just as a note though asperagus from seed will take 3 or 4 years before it really produces a good crop for you.
Good luck with the crop - it is one of my favorites, and fresh asparagus is so much better than the 3+ day old stuff in the supermarket!
